Beta-Sitosterol
For years, European men have taken Beta-Sitosterol and other plant compounds for problems with the prostate.
Now, American men are following suit in great numbers. Beta-Sitosterol is readily available in health-food stores or on the internet, and promising results on Beta-Sitosterol research for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are appearing in medical journals.
Beta Sitosterol is a plant compound that has a chemical structure similar to cholesterol (phytosterol). Beta-Sitosterol is present in foods like soybeans, corn oil and wheat germ. Recently, dense extracts of this phytosterol have been studied for the purposes of decreasing cholesterol and the distress of BPH as often and painful urination.
One study of 200 men with BPH showed significant improvements in urinary problems for those who were given Beta-Sitosterol (20 mg three times a day for six months). No relief at all was reported among the men who were given a placebo.
In 1999, four clinincal trials involving 519 males with mild to moderate BPH were reviewed. Analysis showed that Beta-Sitosterol gave notable relief from urinary problems and increased urine flow with few side effects. The analysis determined that the trial results matched the benefits commonly experienced with prescription drugs for BPH. Further, Beta-Sitosterol shows promise of decreasing cholesterol levels as it controls the symptoms of BPH.
Although it’s not exactly clear how Beta-Sitosterol helps the prostate, some research suggests it may decrease inflammation and prohibit cholesterol accumulation in the prostate gland. However, it does not seem to diminish the size of the prostate.
Beta-Sitosterol may, in some cases, lower increased cholesterol, apparently a function of its ability to block cholesterol absorption by the body. For this effect, relatively high doses are typically needed instead of the standard daily amount of 125 to 250 mg. Consult with your physician for information on taking Beta-Sitosterol to decrease cholesterol.
