Selenium
A nonmetallic element found in soil, Selenium is integrated into proteins. This integration makes selenoproteins. Selenoproteins are antioxidant enzymes that are essential. Selenoproteins have antioxidant properties, these antioxidant properties help in the prevention of free radical cellular damage. Selenoproteins also play a role in the immune system and help regulate thyroid function.
Now Foods Selenium:
As an essential trace mineral, selenium functions as part of glutathione perioxidase, an antioxidant enzyme. Bonded to this antioxidant enzyme is methionine, an essential sulfur amino acid. Found in the diet in a naturally occurring form, Selenium is found abundantly in wheat germ, Brazil Nuts, seafood and organ meats.
From the FDA's website: "Selenium may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of selenium may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive."
